Cloth wiring repair & replacement
Cloth-insulated wiring crumbles when it is touched, and Central Florida has plenty of it still in service. Sometimes it is a partial replacement; sometimes it is genuinely fine where it sits. We will tell you which.
A single deteriorated circuit is the low end. A pre-1960 house with plaster walls needing all of it replaced is the top. Nobody can quote this honestly without opening a few boxes first.

Storefronts and offices in historic districts — cloth and knob-and-tube replaced around tenants, with historic review handled.

Replacing branch circuits is permitted work with rough and final inspections. In Winter Park, Sanford and the older Orlando districts there can be historic review as well — we identify that at the estimate.
It surfaces at resale, in an insurance claim, and in an inspection you did not schedule.
If a bid is dramatically under ours, ask whether the permit is included. Usually that is the difference.

Is cloth wiring the same as knob-and-tube?
Not quite. Knob-and-tube is the older two-conductor system on ceramic insulators; cloth-covered wire is the fabric-sheathed cable used into the 1950s and 60s. Both are common in older Central Florida homes and both need looking at.
Does all of it have to go?
No. Deterioration is uneven — attic runs cook and crumble while runs inside interior walls can be intact. We replace what is bad and document what is not.
Can I get insurance with cloth wiring?
Increasingly hard, and carriers ask directly. A documented partial replacement with a written report often satisfies them. Check your specific carrier before spending.
Is it an immediate fire risk?
It depends entirely on condition and load. Crumbling insulation in a hot attic on an overloaded circuit is a real risk. The same wire in a cool wall on a light load may be stable. That is why we look before we quote.
Do you handle the plaster?
Yes. Historic homes are most of this work, so patching plaster and lath is part of what we do rather than something we hand off.
How long does it take?
A single zone is two to three days. A full replacement in a plaster home runs one to two weeks.
