A portable hookup — inlet box, interlock kit, permit — is the low end and covers a lot of families well. Fixed standby with automatic transfer is the top of the range and depends on size, fuel and distance to the panel.

Both portable hookups and fixed standby installs are permitted and inspected — the interlock is the whole point of the inspection. Fixed installs often involve a gas permit alongside the electrical, and some HOAs add setback review. Our office runs the permit and will flag a siting problem early.
It surfaces at resale, in an insurance claim, and in an inspection you did not schedule.
If a bid is dramatically under ours, ask whether the permit is included. Usually that is the difference.

Can you hook up the portable generator I already have?
Yes, and it is the most cost-effective thing we install. An inlet box plus a breaker interlock kit lets you power real circuits safely instead of running extension cords. Permitted, inspected, roughly $1,200–$2,400.
Is running cords from a portable really that bad?
Backfeeding a dryer outlet with a double-male cord is genuinely dangerous — it energizes your neighborhood service and it kills linemen. An interlock exists specifically so that cannot happen.
Whole home or essential circuits?
Essential circuits cost far less and cover what actually matters in an outage. We size both and let you see the difference in writing.
How fast does a fixed unit transfer?
Automatic switches typically transfer in 10–30 seconds after detecting loss of utility power.
Natural gas or propane?
Natural gas if it is at the street: no refuelling. Propane means a tank, but works where gas does not run.
Does it need maintenance?
Fixed units need oil, filters and an annual check — it is a small engine that sits outside in Florida. Portables need fuel stabilizer and an exercise run before every season.
How far ahead of hurricane season should I book?
Well ahead. Lead times and permit queues both stretch in June, and everyone calls the same week a storm forms.
What size generator do I need?
It depends on what you want to run. Essentials usually fit 10–14 kW; a whole house with AC is often 20–26 kW. We do a load calculation so you don't overbuy.
Is a generator interlock kit legal?
Yes, when it's a listed kit for your panel and installed with a permit. It physically stops the generator and the utility from feeding the house at the same time.
How often does a standby generator need service?
Once a year, plus the weekly self-test it runs on its own. Oil, filters and the battery are the usual items.
